Hedge Witch by Simon Kewin Blog Tour + Review

Hedge Witch by Simon Kewin
Publication date: April 2014
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult

Fifteen year-old Cait Weerd has no idea she’s being sought by the undain: sorcerous creatures of necromancy that feed off the spirit of the living. She doesn’t know the undain need her blood to survive. She doesn’t even know she’s a witch, descended from a long line of witches. Cait Weerd doesn’t know a lot, really, but all that’s about to change.

At Manchester Central Library she’s caught up in sudden, horrific violence. In the chaos she’s handed an old book that’s been hidden there and told to run, hide the book or destroy it. It contains all the secrets of the undains’ existence. They and their human servants want to find that as much as they want Cait.

What’s more, she learns that the fate of two worlds is at stake here. Just what she needs. Along with definitely-not-a-boyfriend Danny, she has to decide what the hell to do. Run, fight or just hope it all goes away.

It’s only then she learns who she really is, along with the terrible truth of what the undain have been doing in our world all this time …

Review: First of all, just look at that cover! It is definitely one of the first things that drew me into the book. If you read my post on Tuesday, you already know how much I put into the covers of the books before deciding to read them. Already, I feel like the character is going to be pretty awesome just from her appearance; the awesome hair and eyebrow colors, the piercings she has going on, plus the birds and the background. It all comes together to give a pretty awesome opening to the book.

While I did enjoy this book a lot, I also felt confused a few times as well. That is not at the fault of Simon Kewin, though. I do a lot of my reading whenever I have time to spare (usually when my students have their silent reading time, during my conference period, or at night once I'm already pretty tired). This book is one that takes a lot of attention and concentration, and I know that I did not give it that every time I picked it up. The changing of locations and such confused me a bit, and there were a lot of characters, but I eventually caught up and was able to really enjoy the story.

One of my favorite things about the book was the characters; it was difficult not to like most of them, after all. While the beginning was slow, it was nice to get information about Cait and her family, especially her mother and grandmother. Also, the beginning takes place around a lot of books, and how could a book lover not love that setting? Throughout the novel we get to meet even more wonderful characters though, like Nox. He is the bad guy that you want to hate, but actually kind of love. It's difficult to hate him too much when you get his background story. It's a nice change, actually liking the bad guy when I know that I am not supposed to.

Overall, I found the book to be an entertaining read. It is quite a bit different from things that I usually read, so I was happy to get out of my comfort zone a little bit as well. I definitely think it would be a good read for anyone who enjoys fantasy novels that involve witches and things of the sort.

  1. Great review, Tiffany! It sounds like a fun book and I know what you mean some books are not made to read casually - a few books had me confused for the same reason. Glad you still enjoyed it overall, though!
